for everyone
You won't believe it until you see it with your own eyes.

The background :
I heard from Jaime and Penny about this old lady who hoards about 40 cats and 2 dogs in her 3 room HDB.  The living condition is so terribly filthy and smelly that it's really not a place for animals to live, let alone human.

The visit :
Last weekend, we went to visit the place.  The sight was just ghastly and the stench was unbearable.  I was gagging even though I was wearing a mask.  Although the windows were sealed shut with plastic sheet, you could smell the stench once you exit from the lift.  There were junk laying outside the unit at the lift lobby and corridor.  Inside, the place was like the House of Horror - dim and dark, blackened walls, filth and stench filled the place and encompasses you like a cocoon.

There were sick cats and kittens everywhere and they were all scared and hiding.  Many were having conjunctivitis eye infection, some having flu and upper respiratory syndrome.  According to Jaime, quite alot of kittens have died.  The environment is just not conducive because it's dirty and contaminated, causing the virus and germs to be even more contagious.

The cats were all fed a diet of raw chicken heads.  The old lady's fridge doesn't work so all raw food are left out for days, to the extend that chicken heads are blackened with decomposition.  When Jaime lifted up newspapers that were covering some decomposed chicken heads, she saw many squirming maggots.

The cats have cockroaches for company.  The walls were just crawling with roaches and other unidentifiable insects and bugs.  They were breeding in the wall crevices and cracks.  The floor is smeared with faeces and urine.  Some cats were having diarrhea so the whole place is just one huge shithole! (Sorry...lack of a better word to describe the place.)

Roaches and maggots are not the only breeding beings there, even the cats were breeding non-stop because they are not sterilised.  Old lady refuses to let anyone bring her cats for sterilisation or even medical treatment.  When people try to remove her cats, she threatened to burn the place down, killing both herself and cats.  So, we figure that brute force will not work.  Just have to slowly try to clean up the place and do whatever we can for the sake of these poor animals.

The National Day mission :  Jaime, her sis and Natasha bravely went in with gloves, masks and shower cap to clean up the place.  I went in with another gal to smuggle out 3 cats in serious condition and brought them to the vet.  One cat, suspected pregnant, seems to be having quite serious UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), and the vets are suspecting that her kidney / liver are malfunctioning.  A medium-sized kitten has severe conjunctivitis and diarrhea.  And a tiny palm-sized long-hair kitten has such a serious eye infection that one eyeball is about to explode.  It's at risk of losing that eye.

I really salute Jaime, her sis and Natasha.  Despite the filth and stench, they stayed in there for hours to clean up the place.  I was already trying not to puke from the smell while standing outside the house!

Hopefully we'll have enough finances and energy to keep going....

Dear thosailove,

I remember a very meaningful statement I read from Cat Welfare once.. you don’t have to be a cat/ dog lover to feel sorry for them/ want to help them. You just need a sense of justice to motivate you to help the poor suffering creatures, even if you do not have any special emotional attachments to them...

From the email you have forwarded, it sounds as though you're very willing to give the animals back to the lady after cleaning up. PLEASE RECONSIDER. I'm sure you all know hoarding is animal cruelty. The lady is incapable of looking after herself and her flat, let alone the animals. Returning them to her is not considered helping her. Don't fool yourself into thinking you're doing her a favour. These animals deserve to go to a good, loving home after being horribly mistreated for so long. I've sent you an email, and I feel very strongly about this. Don't propogate more cruelty, please!

This seems like a very delicate situation where a frail old lady is standing between the poor cats and daylight. You can’t ramp her down and pull out the poor cats for the fear of further aggravating her poor heath.

I’m sure she is a very tough, stubborn one when she can live in such condition for so long; she must be very driven (not necessarily by love for the cats) to be carrying bags of chicken head home to feed the cats, I’m sure that’s very heavy for a 70 yr old lady; she remembers they need to eat! (makes me wonder what she eats herself), unfortunately she does not appeal to reasoning when even her children cannot talk her out of it…and have almost given up; she must be very lonely, paranoid and therefore afraid of cats escaping - if you look at the pictures you’ll notice the cats are bound by raffia. Maybe some had escaped. Or perhaps some died and she thought they escaped. For all you know, with her unsound mind and warped sense of reality, she believes she’s the protector of the cats, who though is unable to offer them the best, will protect them with her life (from evil us).

It seems we cannot reach out to the authorities. They will only step in to help the human and put the cats in danger.

Not the best option, but promising the old lady the cats will come back and really bringing them back in better condition will gain her trust. It’ll also earn the passports for the other cats to leave the house. Number sent back shd be lesser than number smuggled out..she prob doesn't notice. The old lady is not capable of taking care of the cats, but the cats can be taken care of with the close supervision of the volunteers. If the authorities/police don't come into the picture, she can well shut the door in the volunteers' faces. Supposed she has to feel the "benefits" of letting the volunteers into her house and still feel in control.

I really agree with decadenz, to let the cats/ dogs back into the house would be sending refugees back into their war torn countries. It's like letting them see light at the tunnel and then closing the outlet to the light. They may be animals but they definitely don't deserve to be submitted to such "love" by this old lady.

Sorry to say, the old lady obviously needs psychiatric help and these pets are not the solution. By trying to win her trust (which would definitely take a lot of effort and also alot of time which the animals in the house cannot afford) I think it's just a futile attempt at trying to make this a melodramatic episode.

My suggestion would be simple, to get the animals out of the house, and seek the authorities on her condition. Since her own children can't even get through to her, what makes her trust absolute strangers more?? If she was really capable of taking care of herself, then I have no qualms that she is able to take care of others, but the case is now she can't even take care of herself! Give yourself the safety vest first before giving it to your child - if you can't help yourself, how to help other? And using the cats/dogs as a security blanket in that way is just SICK and SELFISH.

Yes, i strongly agree with those who aobjected to sending the animals back to the old lady after they have been treated just simply for the sake of ' winning her trust'so that she will not harm more animals. We really have to extend help to those in dire need now ( cases that we know of directly ). Its like y worry abt something not (yet ) happening , yet do not do much to alleviate those we know are suffering now. It doesnt make sense. It might be only a threat from her. Surely the authorities like MCYS can do something for pple like them, obviously not in the right sense of mind, harming animals today, tomorrow, maybe humans? In that case, everyone in Singapore, whn faced with the law, can escape simply by threatening to 'kill themselves' ?? What is this? If eben they dun value and can joke abt their own lives, nobody else is responsible for them then.

But all in all, the animals are the most innocent parties, they do not deserve to be part of this madness at all! I'm goiing to get the media and authoritoes attention , even to the minister in charge of this area. This madness has to be stopped!!
Its not good enough to say "So sad, oh no... poor things" ...and leave it at that.
I'm sure the animals are crying for help inside there. I hope i'll get support from genuine animal lovers out therewhen i need it.
A progressive country is not only abt economic and academic, social responsibilty includes that of compassion for animals who can feel pain and discomfort like you and me. Humanity is not complete if we can watch a fellow living being in agony, never mind that they are of different species as us, yet go away without extending the help that we can.

So the majority of you are for the cats being put to sleep than to give them another shot at their lives.

Because most of them would be put to sleep since SPCA would not have space to house them if they're unable to get adopters for these cats.

To the old lady, you are fucking sick in the head! You are so old, why don't you just die?! Oh wait.. before you do, you will definitely not be spared of sufferings!!

I've been told this happens when you get infected with toxoplasmosis... basically, it's a parasite that only reproduces on feline intestines, and when it infects you, it controls your mind and makes you do stuff that will increase your chances to infect a cat. If you're a mouse, you go out more often and expose yourself to a cat. If you're a human, you start hoarding cats in an attempt to infect as much cats as possible.

It also happens due to mental disease. I don't know exactly how, but I do know of quite a bit of hoarders and packrats who turn their house into a mess either because they're depressed and subconsciously believe their house must reflect their internal misery, or due to some other mechanism I unfortunately don't know...
